Photo Album: Community Comes Together to Raise Over $2000 for Preservation of Historic Mt. Olive Cemetery
The Historic Mount Olive Cemetery stands as a testament to the rich history and deep-rooted legacy of Mars Hill, N.C. It is the final resting place of key community figures like Joseph Anderson, the co-founder of Mars Hill University, and Viola King Barnette, an advocate whose efforts paved the way for secondary education across the state. These individuals, along with many others, helped shape the foundation of our community, and it is our responsibility to honor and preserve their contributions.
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church hosted a special event to support the preservation and beautification of this historic site. The Third Annual Black History Month Fundraiser, a Soup Supper, brought together community members from near and far to celebrate the rich history of those buried at Mount Olive and raise funds for the ongoing maintenance of the cemetery.
A Heartwarming Evening of Community Support
The event kicked off with a delightful meal featuring a warm bowl of soup. Guests had the option to enjoy their meal either as a takeout or dine in at the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. As the evening unfolded, it became clear that the occasion was more than just about food – it was a celebration of our shared history and an opportunity to come together for a common cause.
This year’s event was a tremendous success, with over $2,000 raised to support the preservation of the cemetery, bringing the three-year total to over $9,000. These funds will go toward the ongoing maintenance and beautification efforts of the historic Mount Olive Cemetery, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and honor the important historical figures buried there.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Joseph Anderson, co-founder of Mars Hill University, and Viola King Barnette, whose advocacy for secondary education led to groundbreaking changes across the state, are just two of the many individuals whose contributions continue to resonate today. By supporting this event, participants helped secure the legacy of these and other figures while ensuring the cemetery remains a place of remembrance and reflection for years to come.
Why It Matters
Supporting the preservation of Historic Mount Olive Cemetery is more than just maintaining a physical site – it’s about keeping the stories of those who shaped our community alive. The cemetery serves as a living history book, offering us the chance to reflect on our roots and the tireless efforts of those who fought for progress, education, and equality.
Your participation in this event not only provided a meal and a sense of camaraderie but also played an integral part in preserving an important part of Mars Hill’s history. The funds raised will help maintain the cemetery’s beauty and ensure that these stories are not forgotten.
